FHWA Mobile Concrete Technology Center

The FHWA MCTC works with agencies, industry, and academia to develop and implement concrete technologies. The program emphasis is to assist agencies with improving their quality assurance programs and also with industry to improve quality control programs. Mr. Praul will present an overview of the program, including tools that Florida can use today to improve concrete infrastructure.

FDOT Test Road Update

The Florida Concrete Test Road includes 2.5 miles of experimental concrete pavement and is expected to open to traffic in Spring 2022. It will allow for a comprehensive in-service performance assessment of new and emerging concrete pavement technologies while giving full consideration to factors such as traffic loading, design features, materials properties, construction practices, and environmental conditions. The test road is the only full-scale concrete pavement test facility in the Southeastern United States. This presentation will include a description of the experiments and construction as well as some initial findings.

Tim Ruelke
Director, Office of Materials
Florida Department of Transportation

NEXTGEN Concrete

FDOT needs new tools to better assess concrete mixes for specific applications, including minimizing cracking in structural elements. This assessment needs to adapt to the ever changing physical, chemical and market issues associated with concrete’s constituent ingredients. Specifically, we need tests that: Measure a mix’s shrinkage potential, Sulfate and Chloride durability and potential to generate excessive heat. These are the key materials related factors generating cracking in FDOT’s concrete elements. The tests should be simple, low cost, avoid use of hazardous materials and take no longer than 30 days to complete. FDOT is sponsoring research to develop new performance tests.

Jagan Gudimettla
Project Manager
Federal Highway Administration
Office of Preconstruction, Construction, & Pavements

New and Innovative Concrete Testing Technologies

This presentation introduces recent technologies or concepts related to testing concrete during mixture design and production. The tests / concepts outlined are simple, practical and field implementable. Some of the tests that would be showcased include the Box Test, Optimized Gradation, Semi-Adiabatic Calorimeter, Surface Resistivity, W/Cm ratio measurement, nondestructive pavement thickness measurement etc.

Reducing Concrete’s Carbon Footprint with Portland-Limestone Cement

With a growing interest in sustainability, the construction industry is looking for solutions to help reduce its carbon footprint. The Portland Cement Association’s newly released Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality lays out the cement and concrete industry’s commitment to a lower carbon future. With its proven performance, portland-limestone cement, or PLC, will play a key role. This presentation explains what PLCs are, how to use and specify them, and presents results of research comparing ordinary portland cement concrete to PLC concrete, along with several examples of successful PLC projects in the U.S. over the past decade.

Design and Construction of Concrete Roundabouts

Roundabouts have become a popular intersection type due to their safety and efficiency for the traveling public. Concrete roundabouts are an excellent option that deliver the safety and efficiency for the travelling public in a way that is both long-lasting and low-maintenance for the owner. This presentation will review the main design and construction considerations for bringing a concrete roundabout to life.
